The drama story begins with the alarming image of a body floating on a raft. We don’t see the man’s face, but the camera focuses on his unique wristwatch as a fisherman approaches the man takes his belongings and walks away with the watch in his possession.
Now we’ve travelled back in time and that unique watch is on the wrist of Seo Dong Joo ( our male protagonist). He works as a trusted assistant to the Daesan Empire’s CHAIRMAN Cha Gang-Cheon.
Seo Dong Joo doesn’t wait to get his hands dirty on the chairman’s behalf. He using a combination of bribery, blackmail, and good old-fashioned brute power to procure a favourable result in a legal hearing involving Chairman Cha’s son-in-law, Heo Il-do. Despite helping Dong-joo’s intelligence and talents, it’s clear that Il-do hates Dong-joo’s closeness with Chairman Cha.
Seo Dong Joo once chose love over power and wealth, Once, Dong-joo had dreamed of evading his way into the Daesan family fortune by wooing and marrying Il-do’s daughter. But before he got the chance to attempt it, he met YEO EUN-NAM his love interest, and fell in love with her.
Chairman Cha invites Dong-joo at the last minute as family-adjacent, Il-do’s daughter JenniferIt’s wedding which is meant to be a private family wedding. The ceremony begins and Eun-nam walks down the aisle to join her groom at the altar. Dong-joo was shocked to see Eun-num as a bride and unable to control himself, guards dragged him from the room and locked him in a storage room, where his incredulous laughter turned to sobs and then ice-cold anger. After the ceremony, he’s let out and ordered to carry on with his duties like he hasn’t just had his heart stomped on.
He manages to get a few minutes face-to-face with Eun-nam and asks her Did you ever truly consider marrying me instead? But though she does look sorrowful, she’s made her decision based on what’s best for the family business.
Dong-joo discovers Chairman Cha’s locks have all been changed, it’s clear the chairman himself has been made aware of the link between his now-married granddaughter and his favourite assistant.
