October is Australia’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a special time to acknowledge and support the many women and families across the country affected by breast cancer.
By wearing the pink color you are participating to promote awareness about breast cancer. Donning a pink color or pink ribbon will not cure cancer, but it will help grow the awareness that if cancer discovered early, there is still a chance to be cured.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month originated in the United States in the 1980s and is now the internationally recognized month for breast cancer awareness.
According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia, and horrifyingly, that number is on the rise.
Everyday in Australia eight women die from the disease, making it never more important to ‘think pink‘ and take action.
Be alert!
Detecting breast cancer on early stage provides the best chance of surviving the disease. You don’t have be an expert or use a special technique to check your breasts. Don’t ignore your health and if you found something atypical consult your GP imminently.
Don’t ignore the changes:
1:a new lump or lumpiness, especially if it’s only in one breast
2:a change in the size or shape of your breast
3:a change to the nipple, such as crusting, ulcer, redness or inversion
4:a nipple discharge that occurs without squeezing
5:a change in the skin of your breast such as redness or dimpling
6:an unusual pain that doesn’t go away.
Most changes aren’t due to breast cancer but it’s important to see your doctor without delay if you notice any of these changes.
Promoting awareness is an important part of defeating the impact of breast cancer on women and their families. Be a part of this and supports the cause the way you container.
